Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-07-12
1. Overview
Notepad-- is local-first. Notes are stored on your Mac in SQLite. We do not run servers to store or sync your data.
2. Data we store locally
- Notes: title, content, category, summary, created/updated timestamps, archived status, and simple metadata (type detection).
- Preferences: AI configuration, categories, window size/position, Pro trial status, and purchase-related app state.
3. AI requests (optional)
- AI features are optional and require your own API key and endpoint.
- If the API key is empty, AI calls are not made; the app uses mock responses.
- Any text sent to an AI provider is limited to the note content needed for title/category suggestions.
- You are responsible for complying with your AI provider’s terms and privacy requirements.
4. Purchases and trial status
Notepad-- Pro purchases are processed by Apple through the Mac App Store. We do not receive or store your payment details. The app checks Apple’s purchase entitlement and stores the 14-day trial status locally on your Mac so Pro access can work without a Notepad-- account.
5. Analytics and tracking
We do not include analytics, ads, or tracking in the app.
6. Data sharing
We do not share or sell your data. All note data remains on your device unless you explicitly send it to an AI provider you configure.
7. Security
Data is stored locally in ~/Library/Application Support/Notepad--/notes.sqlite. Protect your device with macOS security best practices (user account password, FileVault, and backups).
8. Children
The app is not directed to children under 16. If you are under 16, please do not use the app.
9. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Continued use after updates means you accept the revised policy.
